Ex-Band Member Critically Injured

Eddie Serrano, a onetime member of the trailblazing East Los Angeles band Cannibal and the Headhunters, is in critical condition at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, according to a spokeswoman there.

Police said Serrano was injured last Monday about 4 p.m. while riding a motorcycle or bike near Monterey Road and Huntington Drive. Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center nurse supervisor Gwen Moore said Serrano was the victim of a hit-and-run accident. But police could not confirm that account and said they were still investigating.

“He’s in extremely critical condition,” Moore said.

Although Serrano has been comatose and hospitalized since last Monday, he was identified just recently when family members came looking for him, said hospital spokeswoman Adelaida De La Cerda.

A longtime Los Angeles resident, Serrano and the other members of Cannibal and the Headhunters epitomized the Eastside’s Latin-Motown fusion sound during the 1960s and early ‘70s. The band’s biggest hit was “Land of the 1000 Dances,” which did well on the Billboard charts in 1965.
