The local Veterans of Foreign Wars post is sponsoring essay contests for junior high and high school students.

Winners in a contest for 10th-, 11th- and 12th-graders will receive scholarship prizes totaling nearly $140,000.

To enter the contest, students must write and record an essay titled “My Service to America.”

The essay should take no more than five minutes to read aloud.

Scholarship awards will be given to the top 56 writers in the nation, with prizes ranging from $1,000 to $20,000.

Although local participants must deliver both written versions and audiotapes to local VFW Post 11548 by Nov. 1, only the audio will be judged, officials said.

For a contest open to seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders, students are asked to submit written themes of 300 to 400 words on “What Freedom Means to Me.”

Prizes for that contest run from $1,000 to $5,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds. Entries are due by Dec. 15. Winners in both contests will be chosen early next year.

Cecil Birnbaum, youth activities director for the local post, said all youths are eligible. They may enter through their schools or individually.
