Newport Beach’s administrative services director, Dennis Danner, will serve as interim city manager while the City Council finds a permanent replacement for Kevin J. Murphy.

After 6 1/2 years on the job, Murphy abruptly announced his resignation Aug. 11. It takes effect Sept. 26, but he is on vacation until then.

The City Council unanimously chose Danner this week to serve during the six months officials say it will take to find another manager. Danner said he doesn’t want the job permanently.

“I’m just keeping the ship afloat until they find a replacement,” he said.

Danner came to Newport Beach in 1990, two years before Murphy.

Danner will add $1,000 a month to his $111,072 salary during the interim.
