Tentative Accord Reached in Suits by School Officials

A tentative settlement has been reached in a lawsuit filed by two assistant superintendents against the Bonita Unified School District, officials said.

The settlement, which includes cash payments to the two officials, was awaiting the signature of former Supt. Ronald Raya before it can be finalized, sources said.

Last August, Assistant Supts. Peter Schiff and Lorna L. Horton sued the district, which incorporates San Dimas and La Verne.

Schiff, who is now a superintendent in a district near San Diego, alleged he had been defamed by board member Robert Olander II and that Raya hurt his career by giving him a negative reference for another job.

Meanwhile, Horton alleged she had been sexual harassed by Raya, who was fired by the board in 1997.

Olander confirmed Tuesday that he had signed an agreement to resolve the lawsuit.

He said the settlement precluded him from providing further details about the settlement.
