Classes Offer Glimpse Into Sheriff’s Dept.

So you always wanted to be a lawman. Or maybe a law-woman.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department now has a more attainable option for you armchair detectives out there.

The fourth installment of the Sheriff’s Department’s West County Police Services Citizens Academy is set to start Sept. 23.

For those who live or work in the county, the free, popular program offers a chance to learn about the services the department provides.

Classes are held at the department headquarters at the Ventura County Government Center, 800 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura. Starting Sept. 23, they will take place on Wednesday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. until Dec. 16.

Designed to foster a better understanding and stronger partnership between civilians and law enforcement, the academy courses focus on such subjects as criminal law and undercover operations. Participants are given an overview of Sheriff’s Department operations, from the jails to the crime lab, and even ride along with deputies on patrol.

Applicants should contact Rob Davidson or Joe Medina at 654-2668 or 377-8471, respectively. All applications must be turned in to Davidson by Sept. 18.
