7 Bombs Found in Storm Drain Detonated
Seven pipe bombs found by U.S. Forest Service employees Friday in a storm drain were detonated by explosives experts.
The devices were located at East Loma Alta Drive and Lake Avenue about 11 a.m., said Sheriff’s Sgt. George Ducoulombier.
About 30 homes were evacuated and the area was cordoned off as the sheriff’s arson explosives detail used a robot to inspect the pipe bombs. After the devices were rendered safe, residents were allowed to return to their homes.
An investigation has been launched into where the bombs came from.
Meanwhile, a firecracker damaged the mailbox of a Covina-area residence Friday morning, but no one was hurt, authorities said. The mailbox exploded on Ivescrest Avenue shortly after midnight.
Ducoulombier said the two incidents did not appear to be connected.
