Williams Serves a Meaty Challenge

California-born tennis celeb Venus Williams may have lost a recent tournament at Madison Square Garden, but she won a permanent place on the menu at New York City’s Carnegie Deli. Williams hand-picked the ingredients for her namesake sandwich, which debuted Nov. 10, including turkey, roast beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and a sweet pepper--all stacked between two pieces of whole wheat bread and tenuously held together with toothpicks. Nearly 8 inches tall and containing almost 2 pounds of meat, the sandwich is served with a bowl of pickles and costs an astounding $16.95, but, says restaurant manager Moe Allam, “If you finish it, you get another one free.”
