Work of LAPD’s SIS

Share

Re “SIS: Stormy Past, Shaky Future,” Nov. 29: A couple of years ago, in my neighborhood, the LAPD’s Special Investigation Section team arrested a local career street thug who had been in and out of prison several times. The SIS team, after two days of surveillance, interrupted a strong-arm robbery being committed by this parolee and probationer. And as he was a three-time loser, he was sentenced to a long and justly deserved prison term.

This individual will no longer terrorize the neighborhood residents and threaten the witnesses to his crimes. The SIS and the Detective Support Division performed their duties, whereas the judicial system attempted and failed its duty. Thanks, LAPD.

I read your article with interest. Before retiring, I worked and read about events in Los Angeles for 40 years and never heard of SIS. Apparently, they’ve done a good job at being undercover!

Attorney Stephen Yagman’s concern that the ratio of shootings involved in the unit’s operations is high in comparison with other officers seems unwarranted. It appears obvious that this is to be expected when dealing with the worst of the worst.

Let’s face it, this so-called “community policing” will go nowhere if LAPD’s arrogant attitude won’t be changed. In brief, officers treat the poor and minorities with disrespect, never listen to reason and are quick to turn to physical force or firepower. The LAPD’s motto must be “to respect, to protect and to serve.”
