Day for Virgin Mary

Many Catholics today will rise early to attend services that honor the sighting of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The holiday marks the appearance in 1531 of the Virgin Mary before an Indian, Juan Diego, in Mexico. The occasion was celebrated last week in Santa Ana by a procession organized by the Hispanic Ministry of the Diocese of Orange.

The Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at 14072 Olive St. in Westminster scheduled a Mass at 5:30 a.m., following breakfast at the parish center.

“When Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego . . . she appeared so we could identify with her,” said Juanamaria Amezquista of the Hispanic Ministry.
