Jewish Federation Gives $15,000 to Historic Shul

In an effort to preserve a historic synagogue, the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles has announced a $15,000 grant to be used for the landmark Breed Street Shul.

First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton visited the synagogue Thursday as part of the Save America’s Treasures campaign, which seeks to preserve America’s historical sites.

The Jewish Federation grant will be used to install a temporary roof covering for the shul, which was closed in 1993 and was damaged in last winter’s storms.

The fund is similar to one announced Thursday by the J. Paul Getty Trust.

Jewish Federation Vice President John Fishel said the grant is one of many upcoming programs intended to nurture cultural bridges between the Latino and Jewish communities.

The Boyle Heights area, which once had a vibrant Jewish community, today is populated largely by Latino immigrants.
