An apartment building fire that destroyed one unit left seven people homeless Saturday morning, authorities said.

The fire started about 9:45 a.m. at the two-story apartment building in the 2400 block of N. Naomi Street, said Capt. Greg Rhoads of the Burbank Fire Department.

There were no injuries, but an elderly resident with heart problems who became short of breath was examined at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Rhoads said.

Eleven companies from the Burbank and Glendale fire departments responded to the two-alarm blaze. The fire was brought under control in half an hour, Rhoads said.

The fire broke out in an upstairs unit, destroying that apartment and damaging a downstairs unit, he said. The American Red Cross was finding housing for the five adults and two children who lived in both apartments.

The fire caused $100,000 in property damage, Rhoads said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
