Man Charged in Officer’s Slaying

A man was charged with murder--and will be eligible for the death penalty--in connection with last month’s fatal shooting of Los Angeles Police Officer Brian Brown.

Jaimie Mares, 21, of Inglewood was charged Friday with two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, one count of evading an officer and one count of grand theft auto.

Mares, who was shot while attempting to flee police, remains hospitalized.

Brown, 27, was shot to death Nov. 29 when he and his partner saw two men fleeing a murder scene in Mar Vista. After a short chase, Oscar Zatarain, an Inglewood gang member, opened fire with an assault rifle, fatally wounding Brown in the head, police said. Zatarain was shot to death by other officers at the scene.
