Suspect your child has a learning disability? Los Angeles Unified School District officials say the first place to start is with your child’s teacher, who probably will have some insight into the child and his or her needs. Beyond that, parents can request (in writing) a consultation and/or an assessment of their child to see if they qualify for special-education programs. This assessment is available for children ages 3 to 18, even to private school students, as long as they reside within LAUSD boundaries.

If the parent is unsatisfied with actions taken by their local school, they may call the Special Education Division at (818) 904-2036 (East Valley) or (818) 997-2345 (West Valley), or Psychological Services at (818) 904-2040 (East Valley) or (818) 997-2398 (West Valley).

For information about preschoolers with possible learning disabilities, call the Special Education Division.
