Over the protests of dozens of Ole Hanson Elementary parents, the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees on Monday unanimously approved a pilot program that will change student schedules to allow more time for teacher development.

In May, Capistrano Unified elementary schools proposed “banking” instructional minutes--which makes four school days a week longer and one shorter to allow for teacher planning and development meetings. There is no loss in instructional time, but some parents worried that the change will be too disruptive. One parent said she would have to quit her part-time job to accommodate the change. In response, Trustee Peter J. Espinosa said he wants updates on “the number of parents who really have a work conflict with this schedule.” He and other board members approved the program on condition that the board receives regular reports on how the program is working and affecting families.

The trustees also approved the same program for Oak Grove Elementary School in Aliso Viejo.
