Tustin to Get $1.1 Million in Base Reuse Aid

Tustin officials said Wednesday the city will get $1.1 million from the federal government to help with the conversion of the Tustin Marine Corps Air Facility, which closes next summer.
The grant from the Economic Development Administration will help with the extension of Armstrong and Valencia avenues, which now end at the base. Construction could begin in late 1999, said Chris Shingleton, assistant city manager.
Plans for reuse of the 1,561-acre base call for a mix of homes and businesses, a conversion that will require extensive infrastructure improvement.
City officials worked with the EDA for a year to obtain the grant, which will be awarded when final terms and conditions of the conversion are completed, Shingleton said. The city also will seek money from state trade and commerce grants, community development block grants and its own general fund, she said.
