Ailing Rep. Miller Will Not Cast Vote
Rep. George Miller (D-Martinez), recuperating from hip replacement surgery, will not fly to Washington because the House will almost certainly impeach President Clinton, Miller’s chief of staff said Thursday.
Miller was prepared to fly on an Air Force plane and would have voted against impeachment if the vote appeared to be close.
“It is now a foregone conclusion that the president will be impeached by the House,” Chief of Staff Daniel Weiss said. “The risk that he would take after hip surgery would only be justified if the vote was not a foregone conclusion.”
Weiss also noted the timing of the actual vote remained uncertain, although debate of the four articles of impeachment was scheduled to begin today.
Doctors had advised the 53-year-old congressman to remain off his feet at home for six weeks after the Dec. 2 surgery.
