Concordia Men Struggle to Beat Holy Names in Basketball

Concordia got more of a challenge than it had hoped for from Holy Names College, but managed to pull out an 88-82 victory in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday at Concordia.

Concordia’s Harald Hofman led the Eagles (7-4) with 21 points and Joel Burgess had 20. Josh Giles (19 points) and Matt Sebastian (18 points) also finished in double figures for Concordia.

Concordia dominated the rebounding as Burgess and Hofman grabbed a combined 14 offensive boards to lead the team with 23 overall.

Aron Zaballos led Holy Names (2-10) with 20 points.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Cal Lutheran 81, Chapman 71--Sammy Bell scored 15 points for Chapman, but the Panthers couldn’t contain Mike Dulaney, who scored 36 points to lead Cal Lutheran (3-3). Nate Strange scored 14 points and Derek Mitchell had 12 for the visiting Panthers (7-3).

Point Loma Nazarene 84, Hope International 71--Thad Alston had 18 points and Chris Oliver added 17 for Hope International (3-13). Host Point Loma Nazarene is 7-6.

Pomona Pitzer 79, Southern California College 70--Jeremiah Martin scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Pomona Pitzer (4-4). Rashad Wilson scored 18 points for SCC (4-8).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Florida State 84, CS Fullerton 73--Latavia Coleman scored 28 points for visiting Florida State (4-5), which outscored Fullerton, 47-39, in the second half.

Erin Whiteside scored 21 points and had nine rebounds for Fullerton (2-6) before fouling out.
