City officials have agreed to chip in nearly $13,000 to pay overtime for police and other city workers to help with a huge New Year’s Eve bash planned for the Block of Orange.

Normally, private companies and charitable groups compensate the city for aid with special events. But City Council members agreed to be a part of the festivities because they will be oriented toward families and offer a safe way to celebrate the holiday.

More than 50,000 people are expected to come to the free party. No alcohol will be served.

The party will include a swing band and run from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. in front of Park Theatre at the mall, off The City Drive.
