Christmas Comes Early to Housing Project

They go there for tutoring and other after-school activities, but on Monday children from the Pico Aliso housing project went to the Impacto community center to receive holiday gifts.

Dozens of parents and their children filled the center, where they were treated to a party and a visit from Santa.

Wendy Weigman of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial said Impacto collected 500 gifts for the holiday season from companies and individual donors. Some of the gifts were donated to other local community groups, including the Aliso Multipurpose Center, Dolores Mission, Utah Elementary School and 4-H centers.

Created in 1996, Impacto is funded by the city’s Housing Authority, the Streisand Foundation, the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial and Americorps. Many of the center’s staffers are project residents.
