Training Teachers

* Concerning the California State University’s latest plan to produce more teachers (Dec. 19), The Times reported the lack of progress in CSU contract talks with faculty as “an unrelated matter.” I strongly disagree. The CSU administration’s failure to bargain in good faith and Chancellor Charles B. Reed’s lack of respect for the faculty are not atypical of the behavior of school administrators statewide. The chancellor’s failure to recognize the unselfishness of the faculty during the difficult economic times earlier in this decade (and the resulting 12% salary loss in real dollars) sends a strong message to talented students considering teaching as a profession.

As long as working conditions for teachers continue to deteriorate, the need for qualified teachers will continue to grow. Faculty morale and enthusiasm are not issues that can be addressed through the Internet.
