LATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: A longtime anti-tax crusader who was first elected to the Assembly in his 20s, McClintock sought through a constitutional amendment to abolish the fee Californians must pay to license their vehicles. Though the conservative Republican’s legislation failed to pass, the resulting debate led to a 25% reduction in the so-called car tax as part of the state budget, and provisions that could lead to additional cuts if revenues grow faster than expected.

GOALS FOR 1999: Not satisfied with that compromise, McClintock has once again introduced legislation to kill the vehicle licensing fee and has vowed to take his case directly to voters with a statewide initiative, if necessary. He is also focusing on abolishing the diamond carpool lanes on the state’s freeways, calling them an example of government’s ‘fight against the automobile.’ And he also plans to fight for additional freeway lanes instead of spending money on public transportation that ‘no one uses.’
