Student Loans

If the daughter that Edward B. Fiske wrote about in “Uncle Sam Is Too Generous” (Commentary, Jan. 26) can only earn $15,000 a year as an employee of a social service agency and will owe the government $25,000 for her student loans, she certainly made two very significant mistakes.

She selected the wrong graduate major and, second, she failed to borrow the money from her accomplished father. Had she selected a related major that may have led to a much higher-paying annual salary and borrowed from her father, she may have found herself in a much better financial position and she probably wouldn’t have to repay one cent on the loan.

Fiske indicated that he would rather have given the gift of the tuition directly to his daughter. He’s correct, he should have.
