Xircom Posts Decline in Sales and Profits

Xircom in Thousand Oaks reported that sales for the first quarter of fiscal 1998 totaled $52.5 million, compared with $56.3 million a year earlier.

Net income for the quarter that ended Dec. 31 was $2.4 million or 11 cents per share, compared with $4.1 million or 20 cents per share for the first quarter of the previous year.

But compared with fourth-quarter 1997 results, this represents an increase of 151% over sales of $20.9 million, and a return to profitability after incurring a loss of $12.8 million, or 57 cents per share.

Xircom manufactures PC Card and CardBus communications products to connect mobile and remote PC users to corporate networks and online services.
