CHOC-Full of Local References, ‘The Wizard of O.C.’ Offers a Big Lift to Pediatric Care The event: “The Wizard of O.C.,” a salute to Orange County starring local movers and shakers. Staged Friday and Saturday at the Chapman Auditorium in Orange, the second annual CHOC Follies raised funds for the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Orange County.

A long way from Kansas: In a twist on the classic Oz story, the Follies featured Dorky (Monique Bernert), who “follows the Interstate 5” on her search for the good life--and finds it in Orange County. Among the characters she encounters: La-La, the Wicked Witch of Westwood (Judy Barry)--a whip-snapping dominatrix who plots to “annex your pathetic Orange County to my beloved Los Angeles.” Newly retired businessman John Crean played the Wizard.

The audience gave the opening-night performance a standing ovation.

In the spotlight: The all-star cast featured 100 of Orange County’s business, civic and social leaders who had varying degrees of stage experience. “We have people from all different walks of life who want to raise money for CHOC,” said Julie David, Follies chairwoman.

David, whose parents were accomplished ballroom dancers, participated in several dance routines. “You’re a little nervous, but you can feel the energy and excitement,” she said.

Quote: “This is a difficult time in health care, and CHOC never says no” to a sick child, said David Dukes, CEO of Ingram Micro, who narrated the show with KNBC-TV reporter Vikki Vargas. “Unfortunately, it’s very expensive. They need our help.”

Credits: Cast members included Jack Lindquist, Norman Wilson, Derek Smith, Judy Rosener, Sandy and Harriet Sandhu, Kathie Porter, Mia Maffei, Martha Daniel and Michelle Reinglass. Kathy Marlowe Thompson was honorary chairwoman, Gloria Zigner served as producer, John Vaughan was the director and Doug Austin was the music director.

Bottom line: Guests paid $25 to $50 to attend the show or $100 for tickets to the show and cast party. The show, sponsored by the House of Imports, was expected to net more than $175,000 for Children’s Hospital of Orange County in Orange and Children’s Hospital at Mission in Mission Viejo. Proceeds will go to pediatric services and medical equipment.
