Williams Sits, Watches--and Waits

Forward Gary Williams is still feeling the effects of the colon infection he developed last week, USC Coach Henry Bibby said.

“He lost 10 to 15 pounds,” Bibby said. “He wasn’t feeling his normal self and that’s why I didn’t play him a lot in the last two games.”

Williams, averaging 21.1 minutes before his illness, played two minutes against Washington on Thursday and 14 minutes against Washington State on Saturday. Bibby said doctors believed the infection was brought on by something Williams ate.

Not surprisingly, USC has sunk to the bottom of the Pacific 10 Conference in defending against three-point shooting. USC’s opponents have shot a whopping 42.1% (72 of 171).

The Trojans, who are without a player taller than 6 feet 8, have had to concentrate on defending near the basket to stop teams with taller front lines. As a result, opposing guards have been left open to carve up USC from three-point range.
