Cohen Warns of Future Strikes

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen said Tuesday that the U.S. might have to attack Iraq again later even if it hits Baghdad’s forces in the days ahead with the most powerful strikes since the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

“If it should come to military action, the kind of campaign that would be undertaken would be significant,” he told the Senate Armed Services Committee. But, he added, if Iraq continued to flout United Nations resolutions aimed at containing its military power, it is possible that military force “will have to be used in the future.”
