W.Va. Senate Panel OKs Road Kill Proposal
A state Senate committee has approved a proposal to legalize the immediate collection and eating of animals killed by vehicles.
Proponents said Monday that, if drivers can be encouraged to eat their road kill, the state could save paying highway workers to remove the carcasses.
People now can take possession only after they’ve contacted authorities, which “can take hours, and the thing’s spoiled by then,” said sponsoring Sen. Leonard Anderson.
But there are those who can’t stomach the idea of carving up and cooking the carcass of an animal whose life ended in a failed attempt to cross a road.
“I would not like for it to be known that I voted for West Virginians eating road kill,” said Sen. Rebecca White.
