Bob Russell; Co-Creator of ‘Name That Tune’

Bob Russell, 90, entertainer and co-creator of the television game show “Name That Tune.” Russell began his career singing in the choruses of Broadway musicals, then moved on to Philadelphia where he was popular as the singing master of ceremonies at the elegant Cafe Marguery. Russell was the host of the Miss America pageant from 1940 through its first telecast in 1954 and then recommended his friend Bert Parks to succeed him. Ubiquitous in early television, Russell was host or star of several programs, including “Yours for a Song,” “Bonny Maid Versatile Varieties,” “Live Like a Millionaire” and “Your Pet Parade.” He helped create “Name That Tune” and served as host of a few pilot broadcasts.
