Libeu’s Free Throws Give Edison an Upset

Allison Libeu made six of seven free throws in the final minutes, including two in the last three seconds, to give Edison a 47-43 victory over second-ranked Esperanza.

Esperanza (16-7, 6-1) missed six consecutive foul shots with less than a minute left to play.

Michelle Zylstra led Edison (19-4, 4-3) with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Libeu finished with 12 points.

Esperanza was led by Leah Combs with 18 points.

In other Sunset League games:

Marina 67, Huntington Beach 48--Marina’s Natalie Nakase became the Sunset League’s all-time assists leader after making 11 in the victory over the Oilers.

Nakase, who scored 14 points, picked up her 755th assist with 6 minutes 21 seconds remaining. Nakase surpassed Ocean View’s Dana Douty (1982-86) with 751. Nakase is second on the all-time county list behind Brea Olinda’s Nicole Erickson (1990-94), who had 873.

Los Alamitos 45, Fountain Valley 31--Kristin Geoffroy had 16 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocked shots for host Los Alamitos (12-11, 2-5).

In the Century League:

El Modena 67, Foothill 56--Chavaughn Brown scored 29 points and broke her school record with 24 rebounds in the loss for Foothill (9-14, 3-4). Cristina Hernandez led visiting El Modena (10-8, 3-4) with 18 points, five steals and five assists and Shannon Baron added 16 points, while Valerie led in rebounding with 10.

In the Empire League:

No. 6 El Dorado 51, Katella 28--Stephanie Patten scored 12 points and Jennie Bluth added 10 to lead El Dorado (19-3, 7-0). Katella is 3-15, 0-7.

In the Golden West League:

No. 10 Westminster 53, Ocean View 40--Holly Armstrong led a balanced attack with 13 points for host Westminster (20-4, 7-0). Anna Lembke scored 18 points for Ocean View (10-13, 3-4).

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 55, Ontario Christian 39--Cathy Joens led all scorers with 22 points and 10 rebounds for Calvary Chapel (18-4, 6-1). Teammate Erica Waetjen added 12 points and nine steals. Ontario Christian (12-10, 3-4) was led by Cheryl Mearsma with 15 points.

In the Orange League:

No. 1 Brea Olinda 75, Valencia 14--Lindsey Davidson scored 17 points, Chelsea Trotter had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Kate Ides went six for six in the field and scored 13 points for Brea (21-1, 7-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 36, Estancia 35--Julie Collett broke a 35-35 tie with three seconds remaining when she made the second of two free throws to put Costa Mesa (10-13, 6-1) ahead for good.

In the Sea View League:

No. 8 El Toro 55, Woodbridge 45--Giuliana Mendiola scored 16 points and her sister Gioconda added 13 to lead El Toro (21-2, 7-0).

Amber Avestruz led Woodbridge (13-10, 4-3) with 12 points and eight rebounds. Natalie Quinn scored 11 and Romina Constantino added 10 points for the Warriors.

Santa Margarita 51, Newport Harbor 32--Venessa Ferragamo scored 14 points to lead host Santa Margarita (13-9, 4-3).

In the South Coast League:

No. 3 Capistrano Valley 70, Dana Hills 37--Natasha Combs scored 11 of her 17 points in the first quarter, when Capistrano Valley outscored visiting Dana Hills, 29-9. Leah Wilde made three three-pointers and scored 14 points for the first-place Cougars (18-4, 7-0).

No. 7 Mater Dei 68, Mission Viejo 32--Cassie Pappas scored 18 points, including four three-pointers, and Lindsay Pavlik added 16 points for host Mater Dei (11-12, 4-2).

No. 4 San Clemente 80, Trabuco Hills 40--The Tritons had four players score in double figures. Andrea Jacobs and Marissa Ficklin each scored 12 and Amanda Engle and Colleen Turnbull each added 11. Jacobs also led with nine rebounds and Debby Caine and Molly Ela combined for 14 assists.

Emily Deeley led Trabuco Hills (14-9, 3-4) with 17 points.
