21 Companies Seeking City Electric Business
Twenty-one companies including some of the nation’s largest energy suppliers have expressed interest in doing business with the city as officials grapple with electric industry deregulation.
Officials said the firms submitted proposals dealing with the future of Anaheim’s city-owned utility department.
Details of the proposals were not released Thursday, but officials said they look at how the municipal utility should approach electric industry deregulation while protecting residents and businesses from higher rates and weakened service.
The city might enter into a public-private partnership with one of the firms or perhaps even sell its utility operation.
Contenders include Enron Capital & Trade of Houston, one of the largest energy trading businesses in the world, as well as PacifiCorp of Portland and Southern California Edison.
City staff and consultants will evaluate the proposals. The City Council is expected to consider one or more of them in June.
