Habitat for Humanity to Put Up Home

Share

Construction of the city’s second Habitat for Humanity home is to begin Feb. 17.

Volunteers from the nonprofit organization will build the three-bedroom, two-bath home on a lot donated by the city at the corner of Las Posas Road and East Loop Drive.

After grading is completed, trench work, rough plumbing and electrical work will begin Feb. 24.

During the week of March 3, forming for the foundation and pouring of the slab will take place.

More than 50 volunteers are expected to help with the “Blitz Build”--similar to an Amish barn raising--which is set for March 14.

Organizers expect the 1,187-square-foot home will be ready for Denise Callaway and her four children in July.

About 65 families from Camarillo applied to buy the house. The new owners must make less than 50% of the area’s median income, which for a family of four, is less than $30,550 annually.

The family also must work on the home and pay a no-interest mortgage, which usually ranges from $450 to $550 per month.

About 200 volunteers worked on the first Camarillo home on Magnolia Street. It was completed in seven weeks in July 1996.

Volunteers will work on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays starting at 8 a.m. Skilled and unskilled volunteers who would like to assist should call Gerry Olsen at 482-4109.
