2 Bases to Combine Some Departments

The Navy bases at Point Mugu and Port Hueneme have agreed to cut costs by combining some departments, including public works, police, fire and recreation.

The move means further downsizing at the bases, with mostly civilian workers losing jobs, officials said.

They would not specify how many jobs are at stake or how much money will be saved, saying details have yet to be worked out.

“The Navy top line continues to go down,” said Capt. Daniel Hambrock, commanding officer of the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme.

“And the Navy needs to modernize its weapons, buy new ships and aircraft and take care of the personnel costs,” he said. “So there needs to be a re-prioritization of money.”

Officials at the bases said the plan will be completed by October. They said middle and top management positions will be trimmed, in addition to lower-level staff jobs.

The consolidation is part of a plan for Pacific Fleet, an administrative arm of the Navy, to take over operations at both the Naval Air Weapons Station at Point Mugu and the construction center in Port Hueneme. Adm. Archie Clemmings will oversee the operation.
