Snowboarder, 14, Missing in Storm
Search and rescue teams braved strong winds and snow Saturday night to look for a 14-year-old snowboarder missing since the afternoon, authorities said.
About 30 searchers from the Antelope Valley, Montrose and San Dimas looked for Jeff Thornton, of Brawley, who was last seen at the Mountain High West ski resort about noon, said Sheriff’s Lt. Steven Fredericks.
Winds of up to 70 mph and heavy snow prevented sheriff’s helicopters from joining the effort, Fredericks said, but search dogs were used.
Thornton was snowboarding with his 30-year-old uncle when the two briefly went out of the area cordoned off for snowboarding. The uncle thought his nephew was behind him, but the boy was gone when he turned around to look.
Sheriff’s rescuers were called in about 2:30 p.m.
