Suggestion Rejected on Adding Lights Along PCH
Turning down the suggestion of county officials to upgrade street lights on the Pacific Coast Highway east of the Malibu Pier, the City Council has voted against adding lights on a mile-long stretch of the road.
A project now underway to move overhead utility lines into underground conduits created an opportunity to erect light poles at the same time, said City Engineer Rick Morgan.
Currently, he said, the ocean side of the street has lights every 75 feet, while lights on the inland side are as far as 1,000 feet apart.
County officials who administer the Malibu Lighting District proposed adding 31 lights on Pacific Coast Highway east of Sweetwater Canyon Road, Morgan said. But council members perceived the extra lights as an unnecessary “urban amenity” at that location, he said.
