New High School Might Be Needed, Report Says
A large number of children moving through the already overcrowded school district might necessitate a new high school, according to a report issued this week.
The Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education received a draft plan Tuesday that covers strategies to cope with the predicted rise in student enrollment.
The number of high school students will increase from 12,018 now to 15,371 in 2008, triggering the need for more classroom space, the report said.
The maximum cost of a new high school was pegged at $100 million, but district officials say they have no money in hand for a new school.
Other measures, such as year-round high schools, though controversial, could increase capacity and alleviate some pressure on the district.
Overall enrollment, according to the report, is expected to rise from the current 53,800 pupils to 56,484 students by 2008.
