Tempers Flare at Sharpton Trial
From Times Wire Reports
A court appearance by the Rev. Al Sharpton, being sued for defamation by a white prosecutor he accused of raping a black teenager, degenerated into a shouting match. Tempers flared as the black activist took the witness stand for a third day in a Poughkeepsie courtroom. Sharpton and two attorneys are being sued by former prosecutor Steven Pagones, one of six white men whom Tawana Brawley, then 15, accused of raping her in November 1987. A year later, a grand jury concluded it was a hoax. Pagones is seeking $395 million in damages.
