Men Move Up; Women Slide Down

The U.S. men quickly opened a 4-1 lead and held on to beat Germany, 8-5, but might have to win their remaining two matches to reach the semifinal round.

The Americans (2-3) are tied with Britain for fifth place in the eight-team field. Only the top four move on after round-robin play concludes.

The U.S. lead was sliced to 6-5 after eight ends, or innings, but a deftly executed takeout by American captain Tim Somerville pushed the lead to 8-5.

Canada remained the only unbeaten men’s team by beating previously unbeaten Switzerland, 8-3. Britain (2-3) defeated Japan (1-4), 9-5 and Norway (3-2) topped Sweden (3-2), 7-4.

The American women, are 1-4 and almost out of medal-round contention after a disputed 8-5 loss to Denmark.
