Kenneth Starr

For nearly 40 years I have been a prosecutor or trial attorney. Never had I heard of a prosecution for perjury or obstruction of justice arising from deposition testimony on a collateral matter in a private suit for money damages. Never, that is, until the Starr Chamber proceedings against the president. Apparently, independent counsel Kenneth Starr is single-mindedly determined to pursue his vendetta, even if he goes down in history as the Benedict Arnold of the 20th century.

Gleeful Republicans should recognize that Americans are fair-minded. The public knows that if the government spent $30 million to investigate anyone, a vengeful prosecutor could develop something embarrassing. The tide has turned against this inquisition.

I am thoroughly disgusted at the way the president and his spin doctors are trying to divert attention away from his problems by unjustly smearing and attacking Starr.

The White House has consistently stonewalled and delayed Starr’s investigations and then has the gall to accuse him of dragging his investigations out.

What kind of despicable person would force a mother to testify against her daughter (Feb. 11)?

The American public and press need to worry less about “leaks” from the office of the independent counsel and more about the drip in the White House.

Why isn’t there a joint independent counsel (made up of a Republican and a Democrat) when it comes to government investigations? Then there wouldn’t be these abusive one-sided partisan witch hunts.

Martin Walker, “An Implacable Search in a Licentious Era” (Opinion, Feb. 8), refers to Torquemada in Spain and Savonarola in Italy as examples of inquisitors gone amok. Our own “Inquisitor,” namely, Starr, is a modern-day clone. He has journalists implying through their questions that the White House, like Florence 500 years ago, is full of wickedness and sin.

The goal of television media these days is to entertain, to build ratings. It is no longer to investigate and discover the truth. The network news programs have become willing tools of Starr, whose tactics ally him closely with the likes of Dostoevski’s Grand Inquisitor.

I did not vote for Bill Clinton because of the Flowers episode, which I believed happened at the time. I worried that Clinton could be compromised/blackmailed over this matter and other women. I was right.

I did not vote Republican because of their greed and dirty tricks during the Nixon affair. I was right. They started in on Clinton the day after he took office.

I will not vote for any politician until the nature of the politics in this country improves.
