Mayor Paints Bright Municipal Picture

Development is on the rise, crime is down and public works crews are laboring hard to ensure that El Nino is just “El Nada” when the storms are over, said Redondo Beach Mayor Greg Hill during his state of the city address this week.

“The state of the city is very good,” Hill said Thursday at a breakfast sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce at the Portofino Hotel and Yacht Club. “Redondo Beach is alive and well.”

Property values are up and the number of new businesses is growing, which will result in a bright economic future for the city, Hill said. He added that the city is seeking grants and pairing up with private businesses to limit costs on public projects.

Redondo Beach has also become a safer place to live, Hill said. Crime in seaside suburb has dropped 40% over the last five years and 14% over the last year, Hill reported. He credited community-oriented policing and outreach programs with curbing crime.

The pro-active approach that the Public Works Department has taken has limited the impact of winter storms on the coastal community, Hill said, noting that the department put in new storm drains. It is also working with the Army Corps of Engineers to stabilize the breakwater in King Harbor.
