Schools to Explain Transfer Policies

Share

Public elementary schools this month will hold meetings to explain a program that allows parents to enroll their children at any campus in the Moorpark Unified School District.

Approval of applications to transfer out of a child’s attendance area is based on whether space is available and how the move would affect ethnic balance.

Since the district began offering transfers four years ago, 95% of requests have been accepted, school district officials said.

The only problem was with Arroyo West Elementary School, which could not accept any students last year because it was filled to capacity, said Frank DePasquale, an assistant superintendent.

School district officials say the opening of Walnut Canyon School in September should open up seats in other campuses. The new school on Casey Road may take in 500 to 600 students. Parents who want a transfer for their child must apply by March 13. The district plans to let parents know by June 5 whether their child will be granted a transfer or placed on a waiting list. The applications are available at each campus and the district office.

Meetings to explain the transfer program and describe school offerings will be held at Arroyo West and Flory schools on Wednesday and all other campuses on Thursday. Information on meeting times and school tours scheduled later in the month is available from each campus.
