East Timor

Congratulations to Melvin Talbert and the National Council of Churches for taking such a courageous position on U.S. policy toward East Timor (“End U.S. Complicity in Indonesian Genocide,” Commentary, Feb. 8). Given that well over 90% of East Timor’s indigenous population is Catholic, why has the Catholic U.S. Council of Bishops not taken a similar stand?

Indonesia is responsible for the deaths of over 200,000 East Timorese since its illegal 1975 invasion. All of us, regardless of our different faiths, should strongly and actively oppose U.S. complicity in Indonesia’s brutal colonial project in East Timor. Our common humanity demands no less.

I would like to see The Times divert 10% of the resources it expends covering Monica Lewinsky to exposing U.S. complicity in the genocide in East Timor. U.S. policy toward East Timor is a scandal truly worthy of The Times’ attention.
