Canada Defeats Denmark, 7-5
The Canadian women’s curling team will leave the Winter Games just as it started them--as the best team in the world.
The Canadian women, aided by a point in the eighth end that was so close a measurement was required, defeated Denmark, 7-5, on Sunday to win the gold medal. It was the first Winter Olympics medal for Denmark in any sport, but it wasn’t the color they wanted.
Canada has won the last two and four of the previous five women’s world championships.
Sweden defeated Britain, 10-6, Sunday for the women’s bronze medal.
Denmark, which has never been a factor before in the Winter Olympics because it lacks the sports facilities of Scandinavian rivals Norway and Sweden, assured itself of a medal by defeating Sweden in the semifinals.
Even Denmark’s curling team often must take a ferry to Sweden to train.
Curling was designated a demonstration sport in 1924, 1932, 1936, 1964, 1988 and 1992 before being granted medal status this year.
