A fund-raising dinner held by the Mothers of East Los Angeles raised about $20,000 for scholarships.

More than 300 people, including Assembly members Antonio Villaraigosa and Gil Cedillo, attended the group’s scholarship dinner at El Mercado in East Los Angeles.

In the last five years, the organization has awarded more than $100,000 to 200 high school seniors and college students. Most of the applicants come from families with a household income under $20,000.

“They have such a desire to go to college,” said Elsa Lopez, project director. “We feel it’s not an option to help them. It’s something we should do to help them reach their dreams.”

High school seniors and college students have until April 15 to apply for the scholarships. The grants will range from $300 to $1,000.
