‘Village’ Transition to Space-Saver School

Before pupils attend one of the city’s newest intermediate schools, they may be asked to enroll in “Mendez Village.”

Mendez Fundamental Intermediate is scheduled to open in the middle of the 1999-2000 school year, prompting the proposal for the village, a collection of portable classrooms designed to ensure a smooth transition to the new campus.

About 200 sixth-graders who will attend Mendez would begin classes at the village during the 1998-99 school year, according to a Santa Ana Unified School District proposal. Another 200 would follow during the first semester of the 1999-2000 school year.

Mendez will be the state’s first space-saver school, so named for its placement next to a commercial development.

The village would be at Muir Fundamental School, where students are using portables during construction at that school.

Santa Ana trustees will consider the proposal further in coming weeks. Parents have asked that adequate resources, including computers, be available to village students.
