Lawmaker Criticizes Display of U.S. Flag
An Iranian legislator lashed out at organizers of an international wrestling tournament for allowing the U.S. flag to be displayed with honor at the opening ceremony in Tehran. Fans cheered when the flag was carried Tuesday by a U.S. wrestling team, the most prominently publicized Americans to visit Iran since the 1979 revolution. The U.S. wrestlers, meanwhile, visited a market where shoppers who recognized them shouted the few words of English they knew: “Hello” and “Welcome.” The wrestlers’ visit comes after a call last month by President Mohammad Khatami for cultural exchanges.
