Standing outside the Twin Towers jail in downtown Los Angeles, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and other civil rights leaders called Thursday for people of all ethnic backgrounds to unite in an effort to secure jobs, housing and educational opportunities for low-income people.

Jackson was joined at the jail by Danny Bakewell Sr. of the Brotherhood Crusade and about a dozen other local civil rights leaders. The activists urged citizens to participate in the “Save the Dream” march, which will begin at 8 a.m. Monday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It will conclude at the downtown Ronald Reagan State Building.

“We need to let people know that we are a powerful force,” Bakewell said. “This is a self-interest march.”
