Tree Panel to Heed Community Input

Share

Tree committee members this week said they will listen carefully to residents and businesses in selecting varieties that will help beautify and repopulate the city’s so-called urban forest.

Members met for the first time this week at City Hall and asked representatives from different neighborhoods for their opinions. Some parts of the city have only half the number of trees considered appropriate.

“It’s not going to be the city’s tree committee; it will be the community’s,” said City Councilwoman Alice Jempsa, a member of the committee. “The residents are going to make the decisions, as long as they’re legal and within appropriate guidelines.”

Members this week discussed needed repairs to curbs, sidewalks and gutters harmed by tree roots. They also considered varieties that would fit in narrow places.

The committee, which will make recommendations to the City Council on major issues, will meet again March 10.
