The Japanese, who have strict gun laws, feared there might be problems with the biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing with target shooting. So, they made sure the target rifles and ammunition came into the country separately, the shells to be distributed to the athletes just before each practice or competition. Apparently, someone forgot about afterward.

Five unused bullets turned up in a waste basket at a biathlon locker room and race managers have been issued a warning by police.

“Some athletes aren’t careful looking after the bullets,” one official said.
