Pacers File Protest Over Violation in Loss

The Indiana Pacers have filed a protest over calls that let Orlando shoot--and make--four free throws in a row in the Magic’s 93-91 victory Friday.

The confusion began when Pacer forward Antonio Davis was called for fouling Danny Schayes with 55.5 seconds left in the third quarter. It was the second foul on Indiana within the final two minutes of the quarter, so Schayes should have had free throws.

Neither the Orlando scorekeeper nor the officials noticed, and the Magic took the ball out of bounds. Orlando’s trainer went to the scorer’s table to point out the mistake while play continued, and Magic guard Nick Anderson was fouled on a rebound basket with 34.4 seconds remaining.

Schayes and Anderson were awarded free throws, an apparent violation of an NBA rule saying a correctable error shall be ignored “if the offensive team scores or shoots earned free throws on the next possession which occurred due to not attempting merited free throws.”

NBA Commissioner David Stern will rule on the protest. Should he uphold Indiana’s argument, his options include bringing the teams together and resuming play from when the mistake occurred, playing an overtime period or doing nothing.

The Miami Heat placed forward Jamal Mashburn on the injured list because of a broken right thumb and activated Mark Strickland.
