A Torrance hospital announced Monday that it plans to team up with Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson to establish a research training program aimed at increasing the number of minority students pursuing careers in biomedical research.

Under the program, the Harbor-UCLA Research and Education Institute at Harbor/UCLA Medical Center plans to create a program in which students will be mentored as they conduct their research for their master’s degrees.

The nonprofit institute, which manages more than 500 health research studies, hopes to enroll about five students a year during the four-year funding period.
